Journey from Knowledge to

Self-Control Using Spiritual Disciplines

As a Christian, do you know what you should be doing but struggle to do it? You know what I'm talking about. Read your Bible and pray every day. Go to church every Sunday and Bible study every two weeks. Tithe religiously to your church every pay-day. If you've been a Christian for more than five minutes, you already know what I mean. Knowing we "should" do these things is very different from actually doing them.

What if I told you the key to moving forward in your Christian walk isn't a specific set of spiritual disciplines, but discovering the spiritual disciplines God has designed just for you? Every Christian is different and the journey of discipleship, from faith to maturity of unconditional love, requires every Christian to add self-control to knowledge.

The good news is God has made it easy, but you need to discover which disciplines you're great at, so you can make that step and move forward to maturity in Christ.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Transforming Your Spiritual Walk

To Knowledge Add Self-Control is part of a series titled From Faith to Love based on 2 Peter 1:5-6 "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love."

This cycle of discipleship is not a simple one, and many Christian get stuck at one stage or another. Many get stuck knowing what they need to do, the stage of knowledge, but struggle to progress to the next stage, self-control. The church usually preaches a set of three spiritual disciplines, read your Bible, pray, and give to the church (attendance is optional so long as you tithe regularly).

By reading this book, you will

Learn the relevance of spiritual disciplines in daily life.

Discover the transformative power of spiritual disciplines.

Gain insight into what spiritual discipline suits who you are.

Who Needs This Book?

Are you a Christian who has been converted, but not gained much else from the church? Maybe you've been a Christian for a while, listened to all the sermons, but don't really know how to grow into maturity in Christ.

2 Peter 1:3-11 says "His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.

For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is near sighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

It's alot to process, but I believe it to be God's design for the journey of discipleship, from the initial faith of a new believer, through to a mature unconditional love. It is a journey we all walk, both everyday in our walk, and over our entire lifetime and beyond.

To Knowledge Add Self-Control is for the Christian who wants to grow in their walk with Christ, exploring the fruitful world of spiritual disciplines. It's not for the Christian who already exercises great discipline, they probably need the next book in the series, adding perseverance to self-control.

Instead this book is for those who already know what they're supposed to do, but don't know how.

What You'll Learn

14 Spiritual Disciplines

Love

1 Corinthians 13:13 says “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

Fasting

Fasting is a way of humbling ourselves before God. It declares to the heavenly realm we are willing to do anything to seek God’s will.

Bible Meditation

When we want to press deeper with our prayer time into God’s power, and our daily devotion time to draw near to God.

Perseverance

Perseverance is one of the toughest spiritual disciplines. To gain it you need something to persevere through, just as patience.

Rest

Rest is a discipline. It’s choosing to spend time doing the things which are truly the most important in life. It’s choosing to draw near to God.

Prayer

Prayer is one of the most powerful weapons God has given us. Prayer and the word of God go hand in hand, as prayer applies the Word into our lives.

Holiness

Throughout the Bible, we are told “As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10). But we are called to righteousness!

Peace

Philippians 4:7 talks about the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. There is no doubt that God wants to provide us with a Holy Spirit gift of peace in our lives.

Repentance

One of the most important spiritual disciplines in our walk with Christ is that of Repentance. It is through repentance we bring to God our sin, our mistakes, and our brokenness.

Serving

Serving God happens when we’re at work, doing all to His glory (Colossians 3:23-24). It happens at home, when we are caring for our family, or when we are visiting friends.

Tithing

Tithing is an incredibly important spiritual discipline. At its core, tithing relates to our mission here on earth.

The Discipline of Being Disciplined

Do we read in the Bible about how God wants us to do any one of these spiritual disciplines, and keep living our life no difference? It’s about doing what God places in front of us, asking us to do.

Patience

To develop patience, it is closely linked to self-control.
Patience is tough! You must wait for whatever you’ve asked God for.

Gentleness

The fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 include a fruit that is needed more than ever in today’s world, Gentleness. This fruit of the Spirit is not just a result of walking with God, but it is also a discipline.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if we aren't good at spiritual discipline? Are we bad Christians then?

This isn't a book about being great at a specific set of spiritual disciplines. Rather, our heart is that you would walk a journey that includes spiritual disciplines that work best for you. The reality is there exists many churches who have long taught a specific set of disciplines done in a particular way. It's unfortunate that some churches (not yours of course, other churches) have shamed followers of Jesus who don't meet the standard of the pastor, without regard that for many many people these are disciplines that don't work for them.

No person will gain value from spiritual disciplines simply from being great at them! Instead, they gain value from earnestly engaging with God in ways that best suit how He's created you to be.
